Apt-Get Love: Ubuntu 12.04LTS

Somewhere, sometime, somehow I stumbled across this wonderful piece of kit called Linux.  As a Windows user by default (and OSX admirer) I was pleasantly surprised with Ubuntu, and some of the other distros, when I started dabbling in the ever growing world of open source.  After working with OpenSuse for a while, I settled on Ubuntu since it seemed to have the most available software that fit my needs.  Unfortunately, I started using Ubuntu when the then-current LTS, 10.04, was nearing the end of its shelf life.  Not being familiar with their release cycles and still a Linux noob,…

Google Maps Goes Indoors?

I'm just curious...  Is anyone still suprised when Google comes out with something new?  I shouldn't be suprised, but I have to admit, I still do get impressed when I find out the latest little changes that they make.  The latest one I happened across today was Google Maps "Indoors".  Naturally, I click on the 'Learn More' link and start fiddling around with their demo videos (which, I have to say, they have really nailed it when it comes to simplicity and ease of learning).  After a few short minutes, I learned that Google is now heading indoors with their…

Google Apps for Non-Profits

There has never been a better time for cheap, even free, cloud-based productivity.  I've spent quite a bit of time researching cloud services the past month and I've come to one conclusion... I mean, two conclusions...  Err... I mean, I've come to 684 conclusions.  Phew, yeah that's quite a few.  What I'm trying to communicate is that today, when it comes to cloud services, there's quite a lot to choose from.  Of course, there may only be a few that really offer a well-rounded package.  Some of you may be asking, what is the 'cloud' anyway, and I really don't…

Getting Techno-Dizzy

It's Exponentially Overwhelming: I'm sure you've heard the term exponential growth before and you've probably heard that technology is growing, exponentially.  Do you understand how that formula works?  Basically, if something grows exponentially, it adds to itself the same amount that already exists.  This trend, as it applies to technology, is called Moore's Law, which was defined by Gordon E. Moore in a paper he wrote in 1965.  In it he stated that the number of integrated components in a computer was doubling every year.  That rate has fluxuated from doubling every year to about every two years, however, lets…

Full On Tablet PC, Windows 8 Ready

Its truly hard to keep up with all of the latest entries into the tablet arena.  Honestly, I'm getting a bit worn out researching all of the latest trends in this field.  Just when I think I've found the best option out there, something else pops up.  The same is true for smartphones, but lately I'm extremely interested in the tablets and touch-screen desktops. We are really seeing the convergence of laptops and tablets and it seems that everyone is getting into the mix.  However, this new product from Samsung, the Series 7 Slate PC, is truly the first option…

Tablets Get Productive, Enterprise Style

Above:  Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet Below:  Asus Eee Pad Transformer If you've just gone out and purchased a standard laptop recently and were perhaps on the fence about getting a tablet instead, there's plenty of reason to kick yourself.  I know, its just simply not fair is it?  Don't worry, I feel the pressure as well.  Since I'm always trying to research and keep up with the latest technology trends, it becomes very hard to remain satisfied with the technological decisions I made just 3 months ago.  Technology is increasing at such a blinding rate that making a device selection…

Passing of a Visionary-Jobs 1955-2011

The world now mourns the loss of one of the greatest technology visionaries of the computer age.  Steve Jobs passed away yesterday, October 5th, 2011.  Battling pancreatic cancer for more than a few years, Apple's founder was not able to hang on anymore.  I believe many people related to Steve Jobs on a personal level based on their affection for the devices he was responsible for imparting to the world.  There are millions of people who feel his passing as a personal loss in their own lives and that really is an extraordinary thing, yet if you consider the achievements…

HP HD Webcam: Great Deal, Fair Cam

This week I picked up a couple of HP HD 720P webcams, Model HD-3110 from Best Buy and I have been very pleased with the great deal that I received ($49.95), but not so pleased with the performance of the cameras.  Honestly, as a 720P webcam, they are pretty good, but I think when you compare them to Logitech's offerings, they don't quite stack up.  You may be wondering at this point why I decided to spring for the HP over the Logitech, and the answer is simple.  Best Buy had a two-for-one deal online.  They were back ordered for…

Resurrect that Vintage PC, Linux Style

This is a subject that I've been holding off writing because it can be a very simple project for some, and a daunting task for others.  However, it is the kind of thing that should be discussed as there are always plenty of people that can benefit.  Rather than try to attempt to cover every detail in one blog about how you can resurrect an outdated PC, I'll be talking about it over time and through multiple blogs.  Much of this information can be researched, but the best way to achieve success is simply to give it a go and…

Stealing an HP Touchpad

As an avid Apple user the past few years, I never thought I would own something that was not produced with the Apple logo on it.  Recently I found myself with no tablet in my possession as I waited for the soon to be revealed iPad 3.  The tablet device has become an essential part of my everyday life, and without it I felt a little disorganized.  A few weeks back HP decided to discontinue their Tablet product line as the Apple iPad has dominated the market.  What HP did to clear out their inventory was to slash prices from…
